It's working for me

I'm taking a workshop from Shwe Khit and I'm loving it. She is a really great teacher and it's so easy to follow her directions. True, her accent is a little hard to understand but just seeing her instructional videos is enough to repeat what she clicks in Photoshop.
As I said before this is my second 30 days challenge I set up for myself and I'm taking it easy so I don't overwhelm myself and quit the whole thing. :) The face was done on one day and then the below girl with the background was done in 4 days all together.
It's really not that hard so don't think it takes that long to draw her. You can do it all in couple of hours. But as I said I'm taking it easy. I already realized I don't like doing arms and legs. Funny, right, since they're just sticks. :))
Artsyville Tuesday's list for this week is things you're doing that are really working for you (exercise routine, nightly chocolate snack, carpooling, morning writing, organizational strategies, etc...)
  • 30 days challenge, since I'm pushing myself out of my comfort zone
  • green tea
  • reading books every day
  • gluten-free, meat-free and dairy-free diet, ok so dairy I'm still struggling with (can you say cheese?)
  • Cotton Candy Girls

Book 2 and the Winner

The second book I chose for The Artful Readers Club is

My review:
5*

This was a great book. Avery and Marcus are amazing characters and I really loved how their relationship evolved through the story. I was also impressed by the song lyrics the author came up with. The proposal at the very end was a little too much for me but I guess it’s what a reader would expect from the plot. I wish there was a little more backstory to her brother Justin. I would have loved to have read more about that.

This is the book's blurb:
"After the death of her twin brother, nineteen year old guitar prodigy Avery Jones finds herself desperate, alone, and out of options. Hope arrives in the form of a job opening with Brutal Strength, one of the biggest rock bands out there. Only problem is temperamental lead singer Marcus Anthony doesn't want a woman in the group. So Avery and her manager Trevor come up with a plan involving a Bieber haircut and men's clothing. No one seems to be onto their little con. But what happens when Avery starts falling for Marcus? Will she be able to continue with the farce or will the whole thing come crashing down around her like a house of cards?"

And now for the winner of my Cotton Candy On-line Workshop giveaway.

CONGRATULATIONS!
I sent you an e-mail. Hope to hear from you soon. :)

I'm just as strange as you

“I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it's true I'm here, and I'm just as strange as you.”
― Frida Kahlo

I'm almost at the end of my 30 days challenge. I have two more to go. Can you tell I'm running out of ideas what to paint? :) It was tough and challenging. I did not stick to it every day but I did not skip more than one day and I made up for it the next day with making two videos.

You can find all the videos from the 30 days on my YouTube channel so go on and subscribe if you don't want to miss any future videos. All of the paintings are on my FB page.

I made a separate folder where all the Big Hair Ladies are gathered and you can e-mail me if you want to purchase any of them and I'll send you a PayPal invoice. They are $30 including p&p. They won't be there for long as I intend to exhibit them and I'll take them off the market some time prior to that. Afterwards whatever is not sold at the show will go in my Etsy shop and the price will go up including the shipping fees.

Oh, did I tell you about the 40% discount in my  Etsy shop? It's good until my birthday Sunday the 17th. Just enter coupon code 40PERCENTOFF at checkout.

My next challenge is definitely a digital one. I'm taking a workshop from Shwe Khit as well to get me started. Just watching her videos makes so much sense. I really recommend her workshop if you want to learn about Photoshop.

From a photo to a comic figure & Miss Piggy

You can still see all my my paintings and videos from this 30 days challenge on my YouTube channel so go on and subscribe if you don't want to miss them. And I'm posting paintings on my FB page as I make them. So go over there and check what you missed. :)

I was playing with Photoshop last week. I always dreaded the darn thing. Fist time I opened it I was like, layers? WTF are layers? Why can't it be simple? :)) Then I saw some tutorials and I took Tam's digital workshop but still I wasn't that comfortable with it.

Honestly, the only thing I used it for was to make PDF's and gif. But I do love actions. I'm always excited to see what comes out of it. Some work some don't. I found this comics action and it didn't work at first the way I wanted it. So, I played with my photo a little bit.

I know I sound pathetic. :))) But I'm so excited that I actually figured something out for myself without googling for tutorials. :) Here is a photo of myself. Don't laugh ok. My self-portraits are awful.
this is the original
this one went through sumi-e filter twice and then the film grain
then I used comic action but had to adjust threshold
I used magic lasso to cut the image out and paste it to an empty background

Artsyville Tuesday's list for this week is things you use, but not for their intended purpose.
  • I use my easel as a headphone holder
  • my elliptical bike or whatever it's called holds my blanket but I do intend to reclaim it
  • my art studio is used for storage
  • my computer desk has two functions, obviously the original purpose is maintained and it serves as my art desk as well
  • I took my mothers baking dish and used it for making some backgrounds. Needles to say I forgot spray paints don't come off so now it's mine
  • but being an artist I use a lot of stuff in a way that was not meant to be used like dish sponges, food wrap film, salt, alcohol, drinking straws, shaving foam, etc
  • I use erasers to carve stamps out of
  • poker playing cards as an ATC base
  • old books to tear out pages for collage or paint in them directly
  • I made glass pebbles and washers into jewelry and bottle caps into fridge magnets
  • we use broken tea mugs as pencil containers
  • socks on my dogs paws when she cuts herself and to prevent her from licking it (this just happened recently)
Ok, I have a giveaway going on right now. It is for a FREE spot on my March 2013 Cotton Candy Girls On-line Workshop. Go check it out!

Don't look back & GIVEAWAY

I found this old sketch and I decided to use it so there is no video of me sketching. There is also no video of me coloring the girl because camera wouldn’t film for some reason. Sorry about that. I might do another one later on or you can check my old videos where I’m doing basically the same coloring and shading.

And I managed to trip on the stairs yesterday morning and I burned my hand with tea so I didn't know if I was going to be able to paint. You know the answer if you follow my YouTube channel or my FB page. :)

Artsyville Tuesday's list for this week is anything we want to make a list about. So I'm going with my randomness:
  • I have to tell you about this freaking awesome book called ShatterMe by Tahereh Mafi. I mean this book is amazing! I gave it 6 out of 5 stars. Yes, you read that right. The story is awesome but what got me is this author's writing style. WOW! I can't even describe it, it was like poetry. The word play was brilliant and the storytelling just divine. It pulled me in this girl's world and I was right there in her shattered mind. This is young adult and post-apocalyptic genre so stay clear of it, if you don't like that kind of reads.
  • Another great read is actually a trilogy by Lori Brighton. Mind Readers, Mind Thieves and Mind Games. The first e-book is currently free on Amazon so you might want to check it out. Even though I had some problems with first half of the first book in the series, I really enjoyed this author’s writing. Pace of the story is wonderful, full of suspense and intrigue. You don’t get a chance to be bored reading these books. Surprises keep popping up and you really cannot imagine which way the story is going to go. And characters are so beautifully presented that you immediately fall into their lives. What I didn't like with the first book was at the beginning when it all started and she met Lewis. It was written in an embarrassing way for the heroine who’s POV we’re reading. And I was just embarrassed for her and yelling at her, Why? Why? But once I got past that part the story just exploded.
  • On to the movies. I got a bunch of movies that were based on a book and I cannot believe I have never before watched Trainspotting. We all know the movie is about drugs and that's probably why I avoided it for so long. I really wasn't in the mood for some dark, heavy plot. For some reason I was thinking it was going to more along the line of Wir Kinder vom Banhof ZOO (English title is Christiane F. which is ridiculous - translation would be Children from the subway station ZOO). Ok, back to Trainspotting. It's English and it's about drugs but it has English humor in it and some ridiculous situations. I loved it. Nothing like I expected and I can't believe it took me 17 years to see it.
  • The other book based movie I loved was The Perks of Being a Wallflower. This one surprised me, too. I didn't read the book so I have no idea if the book is any good or if it's better than the movie but the movie is pretty good. I can imagine that if I was to read the book I would get more insight into Charlie's mind as there were some tricky parts that I got a feeling there's more behind than what we see. But it was a beautiful story.
On another note. I decided to open the Cotton Candy Girls On-line Workshop for the second time. Go HERE to find out more about it. It's exactly the same as the first time around and it's only $25.

I'm giving away a FREE spot on my March 2013 Cotton Candy Girls Workshop. Please enter bellow in the Rafflecopter as it's the only way I'm allowed to have a giveaway on FB as well.

You are the best!

I told you about my challenge to try something new for 30 days. Today I'm on day #14 and I'm proud to say I only cheated once when I skipped a day and made up for it the next day. :) Well, nobody's perfect, least of all me.

I'm posting videos on my YouTube channel so go on and subscribe if you don't want to miss them. And I'm posting paintings on my FB page as I make them. So go over there and check what you missed. :)

These girls with paint brushes are something I'm trying out for my next 30 days challenge when I'll try to tackle Photoshop, vector drawings and blog re-design. Ambitious, I know. I probably won't be doing all three at once. :)

On another note, I noticed that sometime this week I reached my 2000th FB page like and 500th blog follower. Yay!!! :))) I'd like to thank everyone for visiting me and following what I do and supporting my art efforts. I appreciate it a lot! You are the best! :)
